Top 10 Best Games Like Subnautica

Subnautica is an underwater open-world adventure. Having crash-landed on an alien planet, your only job is to survive. To do that, you’ll need to build new equipment, find help, and keep your oxygen levels high. At its core, it’s a game of survival and creation!

Best Games Like Subnautica

No Man’s Sky

When No Man’s Sky was first released, it wasn’t quite ready. Fans were disappointed by the lack of promised features, and the long-awaited game ended up having a fizzled release because of it. Thankfully, the game made a quick comeback, and it now has plenty of fans that adore the growing experience represented by the game.

This action-adventure game has similar survival aspects to Subnautica. As a player, you must engage with your abilities to explore, survive, and fight your way through the story.

Platforms: Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

The Forest

A game with an extensive crafting system, The Forest has an unsettling but evoking atmosphere. As a player, you’ll spend much of your time wandering the forest to find materials so that you can keep living on. But here’s the trick, venture into the villages, and you’re more likely to be attacked by monstrous creatures or followed by them until you’re running away.

You won’t always notice the strange happenings around you, or the things watching you from the corner of your vision. But you will eventually start to understand what’s happening – though truly understanding the events around your character will take a little bit of Sherlock Holmes work.

Platforms: Microsoft Windows and PlayStation 4.

Flow

We’ve included FlOw for its underwater theatrics and its links to the survival genre. One of only four games that have ever released by thatgamecompany. Like its fellows, FlOw is an extremely atmospheric game, made to both relax and install a sense of urgency within the player controlling the story.

Your goal is to grow as a species while exploring the vast ocean without any real idea where you are. The graphics of the game are almost hypnotic in nature, beckoning you as you swim around and eat other creatures to survive.

Platforms: Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PSVITA.

Space Engineers

A sandbox-style game where players can build their own spaceships to explore space stations, planets, and the universe as we know it. You can pilot your ships to your destination, travel out to new places to find resources, or just spend hours of your time flying from one place in the great sky to the next.

Though some of the game focuses on the idea of survival, Space Engineers is more of a creation game. Everything within the game can be built, destroyed, and scraped for parts. Everything can be damaged and fixed. If you like games like Minecraft, this is probably a good one for you to play too.

Platforms: Microsoft Windows and Xbox One.

The Long Dark

Considered to be one of the best survival games, The Long Dark has a way of ensuring that you constantly feel like you’re in danger – even when there’s no threat to be seen. You aren’t supposed to survive this game, and that’s a feeling that you get very early on into your playthrough.

You won’t find any zombies here. The apocalypse didn’t occur and cause humans to become something else. Your job is simply to survive in a frozen wasteland that was once the wilds of Canada.

Platforms: Microsoft Windows, Mac, Linux, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

Abzu

The story of Abzu unfolds as you play. It’s a game that revolves around exploration, without the usual looming threat of creatures or other beings trying to come for your head. Here, you can relax and look around. To progress, you may have to complete puzzles, but that’s the most brainpower you’ll require.

Otherwise, it’s a picturesque game designed to let you swim through the oceans without any worries. It’s like FlOw, but with a different design and more complex animation. There’s no story here but the one you create yourself.

Platforms: Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.

Minecraft

A game that includes something for everyone, Minecraft is one of the most popular releases on the market – and has been since its conception. From building entire villages to collecting materials by foraging and hunting block-shaped creatures and animals, there’s plenty for any player to sink their teeth into with this game.

But, of course, your first activity should be to find a safe place before it becomes dark and you’re attacked with nowhere to go.

Platforms: Microsoft Windows, Mac, Linux, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PSVITA, Xbox360, Xbox One, Nintendo 3DS, WiiU, and Nintendo Switch.

Raft

Another oceanic survival game, Raft, starts its players with a literal raft beneath their feet and a rope with a hook on it in their hand. That’s it. To expand your meager flotation device, you’ll need to start fishing for junk as it floats past you.

While you’re doing this, try to ignore the shark that wants to make a meal out of you. The original version of the game – before the release – didn’t have a shark. It got added for suspense!

Platforms: Microsoft Windows and Linux.

Terraria

Many gamers compare Terraria to Minecraft, but they are very different games. Terraria and Minecraft may both use blocks, but there are features in Terraria that don’t exist in the 3D block world of Minecraft.

Terraria is more of an RPG, allowing players to experience the roleplaying aspect of the game as well as the building elements. You can spend time fighting armies of enemies, finding amazing weapons, and exploring the world.

Platforms: Microsoft Windows, Mac, Linux, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PSVITA, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, WiiU, Nintendo 3DS.

Forager

Forager is a unique game. It’s an idle game, which may not be what our readers are expecting from this list, but it makes sense for us to mention it here. You start your game on an empty island, one that is waiting for you to learn how to build a paradise within its borders.

With its survivalist elements, this open-world adventure game is sure to capture your procrastinating heart while you’re bored.

Platforms: Microsoft Windows, Mac, Linux, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch.
