Avatar: The Last Airbender is a show near and dear to our hearts. This Nickelodeon original series was revolutionary with respect to the other programming available at the time.
The Last Airbender had heart, humor, and serious stakes and lessons that other shows did not have.
Drawing references from a variety of East Asian cultures, Avatar crafted a world that is still second to none.
The setting was dynamic, colorful, and unique. Team Avatar could do anything.

Aang’s Age and Nature as the Avatar
We’ve all seen the show. Avatar Aang was destined to put a stop to the Fire Nation’s ever-escalating invasion of the other nations; Aang would defeat Fire Lord Ozai.
As a group of friends, Aang, Katara, Sokka, and their animal companions Appa and Momo, Team Avatar grew up together across their world.
How Old Is Aang?
The first episode of Avatar: The Last Airbender, as well as the opening sequence of every episode, retells the event that set off the whole series: When two kids from the Southern Water Tribe, Katara, and Sokka, discovered the missing Avatar Aang encased in glacial ice.
Aang’s age depends on whether we include his time frozen out at sea or not. Arguments can be made for both, but it makes the most sense for us to go with the age at which he froze.
Aang is 12 years old but remained frozen for 100 years at the age of 12. When he thawed, the world around him had progressed by a century.
Who Did Aang Marry?
The series made this answer pretty clear. As the three books of Avatar: The Last Airbender progressed, it was clear Aang and Katara were developing a strong, close relationship.
Aang married Katara of the Southern Water Tribe. Together, they had three children. Tenzin, an air bender; Kya, a water bender; and Bumi, a non-bender (at first).
How Old Is Aang in Legend of Korra?
We aren’t sure how to break this news to you, but Aang is not in Legend of Korra as a human.
Aang is dead in The Legend of Korra because his death was a necessity for a new avatar to be born.
Aang appears briefly in spirit form but is absent most of the time. Aang died at the early age of 66, leaving behind his kids, Bumi, Tenzin, and Kya, and his wife, Katara.
It’s sad, but this is the nature of the Avatar Cycle. The world would not have had Korra when it needed her if Aang had still been alive.
