Ah, Bucky Barnes, Steve Rogers’s old “friend” from World War II who became more important to the MCU than anyone expected; maybe that’s just us. We weren’t watching Captain America: The Winter Soldier thinking “This guy will have a ton of screen time in Avengers: Endgame and Age of Ultron.”
A side-effect of the super-soldier serum is MCU stardom, apparently. Bucky Barnes may have tried to kill Natasha Romanoff, but that’s water under the bridge.
If you’ve read some of our other articles on character ages, you’ll understand that plain old humans are the easiest to figure out. Even with his augmentation, Bucky is pretty straightforward. Keep reading to learn his age, birthday, and some bonus facts.
Marvel Cinematic Universe Spoiler Alert: If you haven’t seen at least Age of Ultron and Endgame, run!
Bucky Barnes Age and Life in the Modern World
Bucky (Sebastian Stan) was first mentioned vaguely in the second Iron Man movie but made his first real appearance in Captain America: The First Avenger starring Chris Evans.
He would go on to show up in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Spider-Man Far From Home (sorta), and be the semi-titular focus of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier Disney+ series; The Falcon, of course, being Sam Wilson, played by Anthony Mackie.
How Old Is Bucky Barnes?
Our Winter Soldier is in a similar situation to Captain America: he stopped aging. So while he looks like a 20-something, the age he was during World War II, Bucky is a lot older. Unlike Cap, Bucky didn’t take a time travel opportunity to die old as Steve Rogers did.
James Buchanan Barnes was born on March 10, 1917; this makes him old as hell and a Pisces. He should go by James Buchanan instead of Bucky.
Bucky’s on-camera debut, Captain America: The First Avenger, takes place in the 1940s. Bucky Barnes is in his 20s in 1940. This is the physical and visual age he gets stuck in after being treated with the super-soldier serum.
When we see Bucky Barnes enter the present day, it is 2014; in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Bucky Barnes is 97 years old, though still 23 in every other way but physical. This makes him older than Captain America, by the way.
Once we reach Avengers: Endgame, it’s 2018, and the Winter Soldier is 101 years old; after the jump to 2023, his age is 106.
Final Note: Bucky Barnes, the Winter Soldier, is not in the new Doctor Strange movie. The actor himself confirmed this. We’ll find out if this was a lie in May when Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness comes out; we expect this film to raise more questions than answers.
