The Best Anime Gamer Girls (Otaku)
Tomoko Kuroki (WataMote)
Let’s start this list with the odd but tenacious Tomoko!
After mastering the art of wooing virtual boys in otome games, Tomoko was sure she would become popular in high school.
After all, she has dated 100 virtual pretty boys and experienced at least 50 romantic situations in games!
But it was a shocking reality check for her when real life isn’t as easy and smooth sailing as her video games. Her socially awkward self continues to make a lot of blunders.
Don’t worry, Tomoko. A lot of otakus will relate and will definitely cheer you on.
Kirino Kousaka (Oreimo)
Excellent grades, responsible with her modeling job, and overall being a seemingly normal teenager – that’s what Kirino wants to maintain for her reputation.
However, she harbors a secret that she fears might tarnish her name: she loves video games!
But they’re not simple video games. No, her games are of the lascivious kind! They’re the kind that would make a lot of people blush at the mere sight of them.
Shiro (No Game, No Life)
Although a bit of a shut-in and a recluse towards other people except her brother, Shiro possesses impressive skills in logic and strategy.
Together with her brother, they form a duo that absolutely destroys opponents in online games. They even maintain high scores in hundreds of video games.
Shiro is responsible for the calculations, while her brother handles the “negotiation” and “diplomacy” side of things.
Aside from video games, Shiro is also great at chess. But although she is great at games, Shiro has trouble with reading people’s emotions. She mostly relies on her brother when it comes to socializing.
Akira Ono (Hi Score Girl)
In a time when arcade games were just starting to get popular, Haruo made it his dream to become a professional arcade gamer.
But a challenger appears! Enter Akira Ono, a smart and pretty girl from a wealthy family. A lot of people would think she’s a perfect little lady, which is something Haruo doesn’t care about.
What he cares about is that Akira can kick his butt in arcade games!
It’s hard for him to accept that someone like her can defeat him, but he can’t help but be intrigued that someone can finally be at his level.
Gabriel Tenma (Gabriel DropOut)
To become a full-fledged angel, young angels from Heaven have to observe and experience human life on Earth.
Unfortunately, star student Gabriel got a little bit sidetracked with her mission. She has discovered the joy of video games and is enjoying it a little too much.
She has now become an otaku and a hikikomori and spends her days playing video games and loafing around.
The power of video games definitely shouldn’t be underestimated!
Kaho Hinata (Blend S)
This cafe waitress might be a bit tsun-tsun, but her dere side definitely involves video games!
In Cafe Stile, all waitresses have a role to play, and it just turns out that Kaho gets the role of the tsundere.
Her personality off work is more carefree, but although she can keep up with the tsundere role, it’s hard to suppress her excitement and true nature when customers start talking about video games!
Marin Kitagawa (Dress Up Darling)
At first glance, Marin might not seem like she’s into games, but she is secretly a huge otaku and a gamer girl!
Yep, she loves anything mahou shoujo, loves cosplaying and even plays games of the adult genre. But what’s really impressive is her personality.
Marin highly values earnestness and being accepting. She doesn’t like people who are overly critical or judgmental over someone’s hobbies, especially if said hobby is as harmless as liking video games, anime, and sewing.
We salute you, Marin!
Ako Tamaki (And You Thought There Is Never a Girl Online?)
Ah, the online world. Sometimes, you’ll never know whether you’re really talking to a real girl.
This was the case for Hideki. He proposed to a girl he liked in an online game, who turned out to be a man!
But now, a girl in the game named Ako is proposing to him. He doubts if this is another catfish, but it turns out she’s real and is his schoolmate!
Not only is Ako very into games, to the point that she’s a bit of a recluse and dreams of days just spent playing, but she also ends up really liking Hideki.
Katarina Claes (My Next Life as a Villainess)
Who says video game knowledge can’t help you in life? For Katarina, her vast knowledge of otome games is her only lifeline in surviving her new life as a villainess!
You see, Katarina ends up getting the role of the villainess in her new reality. But after hitting her head, she remembers her old life as an otome otaku.
Not wanting to get the bad end in her story, Katarina uses her knowledge and experience in otome games to steer clear of the pitfalls of being a villain!
Karen Tendou (Gamers)
Karen is the whole package – she’s kind, smart, responsible, and a total beauty! Because of these traits, she’s even considered an idol at school.
But despite her academic achievements and reputation, there is one thing she intensely loves: video games.
She enjoys it so much that she actually became the president of the school’s game club. Now that’s a president we can get behind.
Asuna (Sword Art Online)
Asuna didn’t really plan on playing SAO. It was her brother who got a NerveGear and the game. But since he had a sudden business trip, Asuna thought, “Why not?” and tried SAO.
Unfortunately, all players got trapped in the game in a deadly scenario. If you die in-game, you die for real!
At first, Asuna tried to hide for weeks from her new reality. But she eventually got the courage and drive to kill monsters and level up at a fast rate.
Asuna shows that even though you’re not a big gamer at first, it’s a hobby you can pick up and maybe even become great at it!
Karen Kohiruimaki (Gun Gale Online)
Tired of how her tall height makes her stand out and feel self-conscious in real life, Karen decides to be her ideal self in virtual reality.
So in video games, she always picks to be a small character. In Gun Gale Online, she becomes this tiny child-like character who’s clad in pink.
In this persona, Karen feels fulfilled and overjoyed. She even becomes quite a legendary and skilled player in the game!
Aoi Hinami (Bottom-Tier Character Tomozaki)
Not only is Aoi a smart, popular, pretty, and outgoing student, she is excellent at the online game Attack Families!
She meets another skilled player in the game in real life and is shocked to find out that he’s her classmate.
Unfortunately, his game skills don’t translate well to real life, and Aoi finds him quite a mess! Aoi decides to help him level up in real life by helping him with school and socializing.
Get yourself a gamer girlfriend like Aoi!
Chiaki Nanami (Danganronpa: The Animation)
Gamer girls, you say? Well, we can’t skip Chiaki Nanami from Danganronpa. She literally gets the title Ultimate Gamer because of her love of video games!
At first, she didn’t like her natural talent at games because she thought it wouldn’t get her friends. But after being told that she can use video games to play with other people, she slowly opens up.
She can get pretty quiet but can get talkative when the subject is video games!
She’s also good at learning new things, observing, and using her analytical skills, which really helps when playing video games or surviving deadly school activities!
Aoba Suzukaze – New Game
Aoba’s intense love for a certain video game series turned her into a video game character designer.
And her first job? Being a character designer for the third sequel of her favorite series!
There’s a lot of pressure, of course, since she’s a rookie and she loves this series. But Aoba is a hardworking gamer girl and is eager to make a good impression on her new co-workers and peers.
Umaru Doma – Himouto! Umaru-chan
When out and about, Umaru seems like the most perfect student ever.
She has excellent grades, is kind and humble, and her charisma is through the roof, which makes her really popular at school.
But all that goes out the window the moment she steps inside her home. She immediately dons her favorite hamster hoodie, munches on junk food, and spends her time playing video games and lazing about!
She knows how to live the otaku gamer girl life, alright.
Narumi Momose (Wotakoi)
Narumi is a certified otaku. She’s into video games, anime, manga, and cosplaying. She even likes otome and “boy’s love” stuff that she considers herself a fujoshi!
However, she doesn’t want her otaku interests to seep into her real life. It’s because her previous boyfriend dumped her after finding out about her intense interests and fujoshi tendencies.
And so, she tries very hard to seem as un-otaku as possible. But a colleague proposed to her to get an otaku boyfriend instead.
Who wouldn’t want to take up on that offer if said person promises to help you farm for Monster Hunter drops! You bet Narumi is swayed.
Kou Sakuragi (Wotakoi)
Continuing the “Love is Hard For Otaku” train, we have another gamer girl from the same show. Meet the cute but socially anxious gamer girl – Kou Sakuragi!
Kou isn’t big into conversations, as she’s shy, easily gets anxious, and apologizes quickly. She can get really into playing games, to the point that all her focus gets used for that.
But the way to Kou’s heart? To be her gaming friend! She doesn’t mind helping a friend out in leveling up.
Anzu Hoshino (Romantic Killer)
If we were to pick a role model for gamers and internet peeps, Anzu would be high up on our list. There are three things she loves: video games, chocolates, and cats. We definitely approve of those, Anzu.
However, after playing a suspicious otome game, a magical being shows up and forces Anzu to focus on romance while taking everything she loves.
Understandably, Anzu is upset. Cute, hot, and handsome men? Give her video games instead!
Konata Izumi (Lucky Star)
Konata’s the resident gamer in KyoAni’s adorable and comedic slice-of-life series, Lucky Star.
She’s sporty, witty, and funny, but she’d rather spend her time playing video games, reading manga, and watching anime than studying. So even though she’s smart, her grades are a bit shaky.
She got her otaku sensibilities from her dad, who is also a hardcore otaku. In the otaku community, she is actually a legend!
Aside from playing video games with her friends, Konata sometimes plays an MMO with her teacher. What an otaku-filled life!
Squid Girl (Shinryaku! Ika Musume)
Squid Girl left her aquatic home to punish humans for polluting the sea. But what ends up happening is her breaking a beach restaurant’s wall and having to work to pay it off!
Eventually, Squid Girl acclimates to her new home – a little too much, even. Thanks to her new human friends, she discovers the joy of video games!
Seeing her and other characters play various games – from pixel Dragon Quest-like games to fighting games – is quite a treat.
And if you’re a fan of Sega Genesis or Mega Drive, you’ll get a kick out of it being shown a lot in the series.
Moriko Morioka (Recovery of an MMO Junkie)
After spending the entirety of her 20s working non-stop, 30-year-old Moriko Morioka decided to be a NEET and enjoy her time playing an MMO game.
In the game, she reinvents herself as the charming and dashing hero named Hayashi. The more Moriko spends time in the MMO, the more she becomes addicted to her new virtual reality.
It gets to the point that she barely goes outside and has slowly become a recluse from society!
But an encounter at a convenience store one night shakes up her new life. She seems to have bumped into a fellow gamer too. Will this break her MMO cycle?
Usagi Tsukino (Sailor Moon)
To a lot of anime fans, Usagi is the cute and quirky gal who turns into Sailor Moon to save the day.
But for a lot of Sailor Moon fans in the 90s, the old anime absolutely showed Usagi being a gamer girl herself!
Yep, this might come as a surprise, but Usagi and some of her fellow Sailor Senshi like to spend some time at the arcade.
She would play racing games, fighting games, and one particular game called Sailor V.
In the manga, this was used to train Minako or Sailor Venus to improve her use of her powers. Usagi also unknowingly got trained by the game.
Who says games can’t be used for training and education? Tell them Sailor Moon trained with one!
Futaba Sakura (Persona 5: The Animation)
Because of a traumatic event in her past, Futaba became a recluse and a shut-in.
She refused to attend school, socialize and make friends, and even talk about her issues with her guardian and parental figure.
Eventually, she relied on technology to keep her company. Futaba is a beast when it comes to hacking and other computer-related things.
And it’s no surprise that she turned to other geeky things, too, like manga, anime, sci-fi, and of course, video games. You can even see her play video games with Ren/the protagonist.
Thankfully, she eventually opened up to people and started going to school again. But she’s still the geeky gamer girl and Navigator of the group!
Maple (Bofuri)
And our pick for the best gamer girl in anime? We give Maple and her overpowered defense to build the crown!
Maple actually started as someone who had no proper exposure to or knowledge of video games. It was her friend, Risa, who was a pro gamer and the reason she tried out NewWorld Online.
But boy, did she have a unique knack for it! Maple can be a bit of an airhead, but she is eager to learn and curious about things.
Since she’s aware that she’s a newbie to the gaming world, she picked a character build that won’t damage her that much.
Due to her defensive stats and stroke of luck, she leveled up nicely. Her fear of getting hurt made her become one of the strongest and most overpowered characters ever!
Be like Maple – don’t be afraid to pick up a new hobby, like gaming. Who knows, you’re naturally great at it!
