It’s kind of funny how an anime entitled One Piece has 981 episodes; that’s way more than one, am I right? Even the manga has been going for 25 years now.
Monkey D. Luffy is the leader of the Straw Hat Crew and the famous protagonist of One Piece, created by Eiichiro Oda.
Fortunately, despite the series running forever, Luffy and his crew members don’t seem to age that much.
We see Luffy as a kid, as a teen, and on the cusp of real adulthood as the Straw Hat Pirates adventure along.
If there’s one piece of information you’ll get from this article, it’ll be the answer to the question, “How Old Is Monkey D. Luffy?” That was funnier in my head.

Luffy’s Age, Journey, and Choices
Luffy’s devil fruit ability makes his body stretchy like rubber but also makes water completely debilitating to him.
It’s impressive that this young lad has managed many feats on the Grand Line, like fighting the Four Emperors, which culminated in the Wano Country arc after the time skip; Luffy does things his grandfather Garp couldn’t do.
Tiny Boy Monkey D. Luffy (Prologue)
Upon first encountering our diminutive protagonist (chronologically) on his home of Foosha Island, Luffy was a teeny tiny boy, only seven years old.
This is considered a prologue, providing history and background detail for the world and Luffy himself. We learn about the world, his brother Ace, and see how he came to eat the devil fruit.
Larger Boy Luffy (Setting Sail)
The series properly begins with Luffy already getting into trouble at sea. He is suddenly much bigger and older than the toddler from Foosha Island.
This period of time is where the bulk of One Piece takes place, up to the Sabaody arc.
When he finally started his journey and people joined the crew, the Straw Hats, Luffy was 17 years old.
How Old Is Luffy?
Following the Sabaody arc, the Straw Hat Pirates all part ways, and Luffy returned to us two whole years older; he was off training for two years, as one does.
His measly bounty of three hundred million needed some upping.
Luffy is 19 years old from this arc onward. Eiichiro Oda has said that Luffy is still aged 19, even though the story feels much longer.
Fun fact: Monkey D. Luffy’s current bounty is one and a half billion Belly. That’s a LOT of money; Luffy is one hell of a pirate. Would you try and capture/kill him for that much?
We aren’t sure what the Belly to USD conversion is, though…
