Why build one wall when you can build two or three?
The beleaguered human society in Shingeki no Kyojin certainly couldn’t answer this question, considering the fact they built three concentric walls: Wall Maria, Wall Rose, and Wall Sina.
The world created by Hajime Isayama is about so much more than stonemasonry. (Because the walls are definitely made out of stone and nothing else.)
Between fighting the armored titan, dealing with Armin Arlert’s whole deal, and their fellow citizens blossoming into titan form left, and right, Eren and Mikasa live a rough, atypical young adulthood. Life is not easy inside or outside the walls.
(Anime Spoiler Alert: We will flippantly reveal plot twists and turns in this article. If you are not caught up with Attack on Titan media, be careful.)

Mikasa Ackerman’s Age and “Family”
What Mikasa lacks in well-crafted characterization and living family members, she makes up for in brooding.
With deathly resolve, she joins the Survey Corps with the beast titan’s brother, Eren Jaeger; as an armed Survey Corps member, Mikasa kills titans while remaining committed to protecting the less-than-erudite Eren, who really should know better.
As the old saying goes, Mikasa es su casa.
How Old Is Mikasa?
Over the course of the anime series, available on Blu-Ray, many years go by, including a single, large time-skip.
Mikasa, Eren, and Armin are all the same age. Knowing Mikasa’s age in the year 845, the fall of Maria, we can figure out her age at any point in the series.
Childhood flashbacks and the fall of Wall Maria aside, Mikasa is 12 years old early in the series when she joins the Survey Corps. By the time she finishes her corps training in the year 850, Mikasa is 15 years old; she is 19 years old by chapter 91, the year 854.
This roughly aligns with the first three seasons of the anime, age-wise. The time-skip occurs 11 chapters later in the manga and season four of the anime series.
How Old Is Mikasa After the Time-skip?
Season three and chapter 101 of Attack on Titan end in 854. Mikasa, Eren, and their third friend are age 19.
The time-skip is about four years long. Mikasa is 22 years old after chapter 102 of Shingeki no Kyojin and in season four of the anime.
This can be considered her “current” age as far as most viewers and readers are concerned.
Are Mikasa and Levi Related?
We have an article on Levi Ackerman, too.
The Ackerman clan is a formerly large, prominent bloodline in the Attack on Titan world.
After intense persecution, their numbers were reduced to three; after some further events in a clandestine crystal cavern, the Ackerman clan shrunk to two conspicuous members: Mikasa Ackerman and Levi Ackerman.
Their common last name and similar physical features lead some viewers and readers to think these two characters are family, which they probably are.
Mikasa and Levi are related, but very distantly.
They both descend from branches of the same bloodline and share the unique powers that come with that but have no immediate blood relation.
Their common ancestor is further back in the Ackerman family tree than we have access to.
