There are plenty of open-world games out there that have base defense mechanics.
Whether it is random mobs stumbling across your base in Minecraft or other players trying to loot your base in Rust, most open-world games have some sort of defense mechanic. Conan Exiles does things a little differently.
In Conan Exiles, you have a purge bar that you can see on your character screen. The higher that bar fills, the higher the chance of your base being attacked by a bunch of enemies.
The enemies that come and try to destroy your base are known as the purge.

How Does the Purge Bar Work in Conan Exiles?
On multiplayer servers, the purge meter fills as time goes on. However, you fill the meter on single-player and co-op servers by gaining experience. Once the meter hits 75%, that’s when things become potentially dangerous.
After 75%, there is a chance that the purge will spawn in and start attacking your base, that chance only increases as time goes on until you are inevitably struck by a barrage of enemies attempting to knock down your defenses.
Is It Possible To Avoid the Purge in Conan Exiles?
Yes, it is! In the beginner’s area down by the southern river, there’s an area where the purge won’t come for you.
There are also a handful of glitchy zones where the purge won’t spawn. Whether you want to consider this a bonus or an annoying bug is up to you!
What Factors Need To Be Taken Into Consideration Regarding the Purge in Conan Exiles?
There are lots of factors that come into play regarding the speed of your purge bar growth, enemies, difficulty, and more.
Let’s go through all the factors that need to be taken into account in order to understand the danger your character could be in.
Server Admin Controlled Purge in Conan Exiles
If you are playing on a multiplayer server, then the administrator of said server gets to decide the frequency of the purge.
So, depending on what server you are on, you could constantly be battling against the purge, or, in some cases, there’s no purge at all.
Also, depending on the server settings, the purge will still happen when you are not online, meaning that your base can still be attacked while you are away. Always check the game settings before leaving a server.
The Level of Enemies During the Purge in Conan Exiles
This one is mainly affected by where you decide to build your base. If you choose to build your base in some of the more hostile biomes, such as around the volcano or in the frozen areas, then you can expect stronger enemies than if you were to build your base in the jungle biome.
Here’s a rough estimate as to what level of walls and buildings you’ll need to fend off the purge. Keep in mind; this is a rough estimate; better defense equals better chances of keeping the hoard at bay.
- Around the Southern River – T1 Buildings and Walls
- Jungle Biome and the Center of the Map – T2 Walls and Buildings
- The Frozen North and the Volcano Region – T3 Buildings and walls
Owning Multiple Bases/Camps in Conan Exiles
For those out there who have several bases, things become much more difficult.
You won’t know which base is going to be attacked until it happens, so if you aren’t careful, then you may see one of your bases obliterated by a purge in your absence.
How Can You Fend off the Purge in Conan Exiles?
Obviously, fighting is the way to keep these nasties at bay. But there are a bunch of tips and tricks that you can use in order to give yourself the edge over the purge.
Before getting into the tips, it is worth knowing how the purge move and think.
How Does the Purge Behave?
In a word, badly! However, the purge is also slightly predictable. The purge’s AI is programmed to attack the first building it reaches.
This may not sound like important information, but if you think about it, you can use this to your advantage and place objects and buildings strategically in order to heard the enemies into a certain spot.
5 Tips To Defend Your Base Against the Purge
1. Funnel the Enemies Through a Narrowing Area
As mentioned above, due to the purge’s predictability, it is possible to build something to channel the enemies through so you can pick them off one by one.
Build a few narrowing walkways around your base. The idea is that you can force them down the same path where you’ll be waiting, ready to take them down.
2. Make Good Use of Spikes
By building palisades around your base’s exterior, you’ll be causing damage to the oncoming hoard before you even start fighting them off. Something that’s worth noting is that your melee thralls have a tendency to run into your palisades, so try to keep them away if possible.
3. Tamed Animals Can Be Great Defenders
There are plenty of tamable animals in Conan Exiles. If you decide to go out and tame animals like rhinos and wolves, then you’ll have a nice extra protective barrier that can come in very handy during the purge.
4. Get Yourself Some Archer Thralls
By having some archer thralls at elevated strategic points at your base, you are giving yourself an extra helping hand at keeping the purge at bay. Keep in mind that archer thralls aren’t particularly accurate with their fire, but it is better than nothing.
5. Location, Location, Location!
Finishing off with an obvious one, as mentioned a couple of times throughout this article, where you choose to build your base will affect what enemies and what level enemies come at you during the purge.
You can use this to your advantage and build your defenses specifically to deal with the type of enemies you know you’ll be dealing with.
