The Best Follower Mods for Skyrim
These mods add characters with unique backstories, custom dialogue, and even their own questlines, all while bringing fresh and exciting experiences to your gameplay.
20. Spouses Can Live Everywhere
Finding that special someone in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is a magical moment. For the first time you laid digital eyes on them, you knew. Maybe.
Picking a place to live is pretty limited in the vanilla game, so this mod is here to give us some more options when it comes to finding a marital home.
Spouses Can Live Everywhere lets players designate any building or location as their home; their spouse will live there happily, no matter where you pick.
With the custom “Mark New Home” spell, wherever you cast, it turns into your home! Live in a giant castle, out in the woods, under a bridge, or even inside a shop. We won’t judge.
19. Followers Can Relax
We appreciate how dedicated our Skyrim followers are, but what if they could just chill for a sec when we need a break or some quick alone time?
This mod lets you tell your followers to stay in one place and interact naturally with the environment.
It’s a great way to reduce the crowding and clutter around you, so if you want to explore an area on your own or just play with a bit of peace and quiet, this mod can help.
18. Tame the Beasts of Skyrim Ii
Friends, have you ever wanted to pluck a beast out of nature, and have it become your longtime friend?
Alright, so picture this: a massive bear following you around as your loyal companion or a majestic saber cat roaring by your side in the heat of battle. If you’re into spiders, sure, you can make that happen, too.
Tame The Beasts of Skyrim lets you do just that!
This mod lets you tame and recruit all kinds of creatures in Skyrim, from wolves and foxes to trolls and even dragons, turning them into followers.
It’s like having your very own menagerie of fierce beasts to command, and it’s seriously badass.
Just imagine rolling up to the next town with a brutal alpha wolf by your side – now that’s some serious street cred.
17. Sofia – The Funny Fully Voiced Follower
She’s here! Everyone’s favorite comedienne follower.
Sofia is a fully-voiced and humorous follower who loves to provide comic relief – especially during tense moments.
More than that, she knows what quest you’re on and where you guys are in the world of Tamriel. It’s sort of a simulated two-player experience, except she doesn’t know it’s a video game.
Here’s a secret, Sofia is super into you as the player character, but she’ll use her wit, humor, and strength to try to hide the fact.
16. Familiar Faces
This is such a cool concept; we absolutely adore this mod.
With Familiar Faces, you can build monuments to Dragonborne from past playthroughs of Skyrim and take them out as followers to accompany your current character!
It’s like bringing back old buddies you made on previous adventures, but this time they follow your every move, and they used to be you, we guess.
Plus, since the characters are based on your past playthroughs, they’ll have all their own unique stats and perks that you worked to build up over the course of your gameplay.
It’s interactive nostalgia at its finest!
15. Custom Follower: Danariel Stormbow
This bombshell beauty is ready to fight by your side and follow your lead.
She’s a custom follower with devastatingly good looks and the ability to level up along with the player up to the max level of 150.
Danariel is basically the most epic archer you’ll ever meet.
Once you find her at the Rorikstead Frost Fruit Inn, your adventure begins.
And yes, you can marry her.
We won’t mention the body-changer spell that comes with her, but it’s a lot of fun.
14. My Home Is Your Home
This mod lets you assign your followers to live anywhere, even your own custom player housing.
They’ll go about their lives doing regular stuff like sleeping, eating, and working.
Plus, you can even designate specific sleep, work, and patrol areas for up to 60 of them! That’s a lot of followers, though.
As a side bonus, you’ll be able to use any follower that is currently with you to fast-travel to their assigned home! This makes them little walking, customizable teleport beacons. Neat.
13. Miraak the Dragonborn Follower
They may have started as a mere DLC villain, but now players can have this Skyrim legend as a powerful follower.
Miraak is the enemy from the Dragonborn DLC expansion who has the power to absorb a dragon’s soul, just like we do.
They’ll follow you around, aid you in battle, and use their shouts to your advantage.
This mod changes the finale quest in the DLC to give players an option to team up with Miraak, granting him as a follower.
12. Cerwiden -Smart Healer
This mod adds a new healer follower named Cerwiden to your game, and she’s seriously impressive.
Not only is she a skilled healer who can keep you and your followers in top shape during battles, but she’s also got a customizable AI that makes her the most advanced and smartest healer follower out there.
Cerwiden will automatically recognize when you and your followers are injured and will use the most appropriate healing spells to cure you, and she can even use advanced tactics like blocking and dodging to stay alive in combat.
And if that’s not enough, she’s got a ton of other custom features that make her one of the most versatile followers out there, including custom dialogue, new equipment and spells, and even the ability to take orders directly from the player.
11. Meeko Reborn
Meeko is a handsome, talented little man.
The Meeko Reborn mod takes everyone’s favorite canine companion, Meeko, and turns him into an even more awesome follower than before.
Meeko Reborn gives Meeko a full makeover, including new textures, animations, and enhanced sneaking abilities!
Not only that, but Meeko gains a bunch of new dialogue and a warhorn summoning spell to get him out on the field when you need him.
10. Arissa, the Wandering Rogue
She’s a rogue who wanders. What more could you ask for?
This mod adds an Imperial follower with over 600 top-tier, impressive lines of dialogue.
Arissa is designed to be a long-term companion that can accompany you throughout your entire game, from start to finish.
Arissa is a rogue-type character who excels in dual-wielding combat, and she’s just as comfortable using blades, bows, or any armor you give her.
She levels up alongside the player and favors thief-oriented skills like light armor, lockpicking, and one-handed weapons.
Her level is uncapped, so she’ll always be a relevant follower no matter the heights you reach as a player.
9. Vilja in Skyrim
Vilja is a custom follower inspired by another Elder Scrolls character who comes with a ton of personality and backstory.
Vilja has her own extensive dialogue tree that the player is free to adjust, featuring over 5000 lines of custom voice acting, making her one of the most immersive and engaging follower mods around.
But Vilja is more than just a follower – she’s a fully-realized character with her own questline and extensive interactions with the player and other NPCs.
You may remember her great-great-grandmother from the fourth Elder Scrolls, Oblivion.
8. Ultimate Follower Overhaul (UFO)
This mod completely overhauls the follower system in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, adding tons of new features to elevate your companion experience.
UFO adds a ton of features that make it easier for players to manage their followers, like better AI with more options for customization and the ability to have up to 15 active followers at once!
It also introduces horses for some of your followers, making it easier to traverse the vast world of Skyrim.
Along with huge dialogue changes, removed level caps, and tweaked animations, there is a pile of other improvements made that make using followers seamless and enjoyable like it should be.
7. Garm the Husky Companion
Garm the Husky Companion is a mod that adds a furry new follower to your game – Garm, a husky with a ton of lovable personality and charm.
Garm is not your typical follower – he’s not human, for one thing, and he doesn’t have a ton of dialogue. But what he lacks in conversation, he makes up for in loyalty and cuteness.
Garm is a fiercely loyal companion who will follow you anywhere, and he’s also a pretty skilled fighter who can hold his own in combat and stealth-based operations.
On the less expected side, he’ll teach you an underworld portal spell to summon him from anywhere in Tamriel.
Plus, he’s just plain adorable – who wouldn’t want a furry husky friend by their side while exploring Skyrim?
6. Vanilla Voice Expansion (Vve)
It’s more than a little annoying that we can have followers that lack any sort of appropriate follower dialogue lines because of their race or species.
Nothing ruins the magic like a female Khajiit talking like a human female.
With VVE, many types of followers that lacked unique voice lines get new, custom lines appropriate for their character.
As a little side bonus, it also comes with new Khajiit marriage dialogue, if that’s something you were missing from the vanilla game.
5. Hoth
Trust us, you’ve never seen a follower the likes of Hoth. This hulking brute brings more than physical strength.
Hoth is a visually dynamic custom follower with his own one-of-a-kind features from head to toe.
From his armor to his attacks, his quests to his eye textures, not a single bit is standard.
What really sets him apart is his ability to infinitely generate bounty contract quests based on where you are in the world!
If you’re looking for a follower that will be an asset in combat as well as a brand new gameplay angle in himself, check this big guy out.
4. Arvak Legendary Edition
You may already be familiar with this spooky horse as he appears in the base game, but this mod takes him up a notch.
Arvak Legendary Edition is an upgraded version of the disappointing model we get in the Soul Cairn in The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim.
He comes in a wide selection of colors now, too!
Icy blue, fiery red, regular bone colored, and more options are waiting for you to choose the demonic horse of your dreams.
3. Acalypha
There is no shortage of custom followers made by modders looking to self-insert or shove their OCs into the game, but some rise above as something truly special.
Acalypha is a fully-voiced custom follower with a dark, striking appearance and a few quests of her own to offer.
Her piercing blue high elf eyes will follow you wherever you go, and her unique dialogue and quests will keep you entertained.
If you’re looking for a follower who has an impactful presence, Acalypha is the one for you.
Note that this mod requires the Dawnguard DLC.
2. Inigo
This multi-talented cat dude is seriously impressive!
He’s a custom khajiit follower with 7000+ lines of fully-voiced dialogue – and a ton of it is about you!
He’ll level up with you, and he’s super smart about avoiding traps. And if you’re sneaking around, Inigo won’t make a peep – he knows when to keep his mouth shut.
But don’t let his quiet demeanor fool you – when it comes to combat, Inigo is a beast.
He’s highly skilled in archery, one-handed combat, and sneak attacks, making him a deadly force to be reckoned with.
He’s got a lot of health and stamina and a few combat perks that give him a real edge in battle.
Be prepared to hear a lot of chatter – this guy has a lot to say!
1. Dovahbear Companion
We had to! He’s a bear, and he’s a Dovahkin!
With this utter unit by your side, the baddies that dot Tamriel won’t dare mess with you. And the few that do? Their time is up.
This mod adds the ursine main character, Dovahbear, from the YouTube cartoon Dovahbear as a follower.
Bears have come a long way from ruining picnics, now they’re using arcane shouts and tearing up dark forces.
